Proper Understanding of The Bhagavad Gita – Part 139.1


अध्येष्यते च य इमं धर्म्यं संवादमावयो: |
ज्ञानयज्ञेन तेनाहमिष्ट: स्यामिति मे मति: || 70||

adhyeṣhyate cha ya imaṁ dharmyaṁ saṁvādam āvayoḥ
jñāna-yajñena tenā aham iṣhṭaḥ syām iti me matiḥ

(Bhagavad Gita CH-18 V-70)

General Meaning :

And he, who studies this sacred conversation of ours, I am worshipped by him, through the sacrifice of wisdom. This is my considered opinion.

Explanatory Notes : 

Here Lord Krishna emphasizes the immense value of the highest spiritual teachings he imparts to Arjun personally. It has immense spiritual energy, so much of it that even those persons of positive attitude and love and faith study these personally taught secret, supreme knowledge, will have automatically performed the sacrificial ceremony of wisdom sacrifice, procedure. Lord Krishna emphasizes that this is the considered opinion. Those persons, who even hear it from others, or study these scriptures or textbooks, derive indestructible spiritual benefits of peace, joy, and freedom from fear, worry, anxiety tension and stress.


श्रद्धावाननसूयश्च शृणुयादपि यो नर: |
सोऽपि मुक्त: शुभाँल्लोकान्प्राप्नुयात्पुण्यकर्मणाम् || 71||

śhraddhāvān anasūyaśh cha śhṛiṇuyād api yo naraḥ
so ‘pi muktaḥ śhubhāl lokān prāpnuyāt puṇya-karmaṇām

Bhagavad Gita CH-18 V-71

General Meaning :

Also that person of tremendous faith and without any negative attitude hears this, will also be liberated and can attain the joyous worlds of those auspicious activities.

Explanatory Notes : 

Lord Krishna declares that the liberating powers of the teachings are so immensely powerful that even if a person listens to it with full concentration and faith and zeal, also attains the luminous, joyful world of the spirit. Also, the listener should not entertain any malice or negative attitude towards the teachings and the teacher of the Bhagawat Gita.


कच्चिदेतच्छ्रुतं पार्थ त्वयैकाग्रेण चेतसा |
कच्चिदज्ञानसम्मोह: प्रनष्टस्ते धनञ्जय || 72||

kachchid etach chhrutaṁ pārtha tvayaikāgreṇa chetasā
kachchid ajñāna-sammohaḥ pranaṣhṭas te dhanañjaya

Bhagavad Gita CH-18 V-72

General Meaning :

Have you listened to this, O’Paarth, with one pointed mind? Has the delusion caused by your ignorance been destroyed?

Explanatory Meaning :

After imparting intense personal counseling and teachings in the previous verses Krishna is reminding Arjun whether he has listened to his top-secret spiritual lessons with single-minded attention. Whether his mental agitations and previous delusions caused by his ignorance of the spiritual truth been dispelled. To refer to Arjuna’s previous hesitations and objections to perform his duties, which appear to be unpleasant and difficult.


अर्जुन उवाच |
नष्टो मोह: स्मृतिर्लब्धा त्वत्प्रसादान्मयाच्युत |
स्थितोऽस्मि गतसन्देह: करिष्ये वचनं तव || 73||
arjuna uvācha
naṣhṭo mohaḥ smṛitir labdhā tvat-prasādān mayāchyuta
sthito asmi gata-sandehaḥ kariṣhye vachanaṁ tava


(B.G. CH-18; V-73)

General Meaning : (Arjuna Speaks)

Gone is my delusion, I get back my memory, through your grace, O’ Achyuta. Now I am firm, my doubts are gone. I will act as per your directions.

Explanatory Notes

In the previous verse, Lord Krishna asked Arjun whether he has understood the message he passed on to him regarding the Art and Science of Performing one’s duties to one’s best ability and at the same time overcome stress, sufferings, and escape sins and at the same time achieve Self Realization. Lord Krishna wanted to make sure that his dearest friend and disciple should understand this fully and remove his ignorance and delusions and should be fully motivated to perform his duties for the fulfillment of God’s missions. As a reply, Arjun speaks out that his delusions have been destroyed. He has understood the Lord’s message and all his doubts are gone. He admits that this is due to Lord Krishna’s favor and grace. He has got back his Self-confidence and firmness of attitude. He is ready to obey the commands of Lord Krishna (his Guru).

INFERENCE:

Dear friends, most people face this situation (a situation faced by Arjun), some time or the other in their life. Such situations lead to stress, frustration, and depression, which rob a person of the joys of life and living. Arjun was an extremely intelligent, brilliant, and very powerful King and military commander yet he faced such a situation. It is only his best friend and Guru with infinite patience tolerated his weakness and ignorance. So kindly and with extreme compassion, counseled him, advised him & strengthened him. As a result, Arjuna overcame his delusions, stress, doubts, and frustrations and came victorious, successful, composed from a very complicated, challenging, and critical situation in life.
